Jason Roberts – Kozen Judo Instructor
Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt, 2015)
Jason Roberts’ journey in martial arts began at the age of three, when he first stepped onto the mat to practice Hapkido Karate. He trained diligently in striking arts until the age of fifteen, when he discovered Judo—and never looked back.
Since 1994, Jason has immersed himself in the world of Judo, training at a competitive level and earning his place as a member of the Ontario Judo team. He has competed at the Canadian National Judo Championships, testing his skills against some of the country’s finest athletes. In 2015, he was awarded the rank of Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt)—a milestone that marked not an end, but a new beginning in his understanding of the art.
Jason’s favorite technique is Uchi-mata (inner thigh throw), a dynamic and elegant throw that reflects his preference for timing, balance, and fluid movement. Beyond Judo, Jason has continued to expand his knowledge across a wide variety of martial disciplines, with particular expertise in the lawful use of self-defense techniques.
Off the mat, Jason holds NCCP certification and is trained in First Aid & CPR, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
Despite his decades of experience and competitive achievements, Jason views himself as a lifelong student first and an instructor second. He believes the best teachers are those who remain curious, humble, and committed to the principle of mutual benefit. As a Kozen Judo instructor, his goal is not simply to teach throws—but to help students build confidence, resilience, and respect for themselves and others.
